The construction of commodes or chests of drawers basically resolves itself into a matter of providing suitable framing for a series of drawers small square drop leaf table with 2 chairs . The same is true of desks, with a greater emphasis on the writing surface or top of the carcass dresser accessories trinket box with drawers .
Drawer Construction burr walnut antiques . The average drawer in a piece of furniture, whether in the home, the office, or the shop, is a moving part that gets alternately pulled and pushed, day in and day out, over a period of years pleated panel regency furniture . Properly constructed, however, it will stand up to severe usage for a considerable length of time front hall rococo tables .
As explained in Chapter i, the dovetail joint is particularly adapted to resist the tendency of drawer sides to part company with the front as it is pulled forward antique rosewood tea vessel . Simpler joints prove satisfactory for less important construction meissen whiteware animal . To render the practice of dovetail drawer jointing of some practical value, the dimensions and methods employed in the following instruction will result in a drawer (Figure 2 candelabra baroque .58) that will fit into a piece of furniture to be described later italian deco furniture .
The usual procedure is to begin with the front and plane first the lower edge and one side edge, then place the piece in position in its already constructed drawee
opening, before the top and other edge are trimmed to insure a perfect fit george ii burr walnut tallboy . In this case, however, we shall have to assume that when the time comes to make use of the drawer that we are about to construct, the amateur cabinetmaker will have progressed to the extent that his exactness of joinery will insure a perfect fit 1940’s cherry buffet . Before leaving the subject of close fit, it is advisable to point out that a slight taper of the rear edge of the drawer front, not to exceed ‘ha in french antique occasional tables ., will do much to ease a tightly fitting front edge into place canadian drop front pedestal desk .
The same care is exercised in planing and fitting the sides, which must, of course, be cut exactly the same length gilded console table . The back of the drawer is narrower than the front to allow the bottom piece to slide into its grooves from the back, after the drawer frame has been assembled and glued dining table antique spiral turned legs . This groove or dado extends along both sides and into the front, where the bottom tail should be low enough so that the groove occurs within a tail of the corner joint to prevent the appearance of a gap, as in A and 13, Figure 2 tripod side table .58 when were tea tables first used .
Lap dovetails are customarily used in drawer fronts, with sharply inclined pins to insure broad tails for greater resistance antigue dressors . The lowest pin in the draw ’s back is cut without slope in order to accommodate the drawer bottom pillared bookshelves . The best way to cut the pins of a lap dovetail is first to bore out the waste, cleaning the corners with a chisel, since saw kerfs can be made only diagonally, to av id cutting into the lap french 18th century bureau cabinet . Otherwise the procedure is the same as explained in Chap er i (page 34) for the through dovetail markings on antique vase . NAThen a dovetail is glued, a piece of scrip is placed over the joint before it is lightly tapped into position, to avoid bruisitig or splitting the wood characteristics of construction of 18th chevet french . Dovetails should never be tried for fit because this is liable to loosen them bronze+chrome+sculpure+josephine baker .
In place of dovetails many drawers nowadays are assembled with rabbeted (R) front corners and with rabbeted or dadoed (D) rear corners, as shown in -, Figure 2 large walnut veneer gentllemans cupboaard .58 secretaire chest of drawers . The rabbeted corners can be glued and nailed along the sides at die front and on both sides and back at the rear corners harlequin commde . The more satisfactory 1 -k joint (L), or lock rabbet joint, already described in Chapter 1, is also illustratd
The matter of drawer slides (runs or runners) and guides is important to smooth operation of the drawer dining table, 19th century . As shown in A, Figure 2 antique english column candlesticks .59, if both the slides (S) and guides (G) are allowed to project about I/w in antique carved trestle table . above the rails and beyond the stiles or posts or legs, much wear will be prevented west indies bedroom furniture . They should not, however, extend below the rails, thus interfering with the drawer beneath or its contents rosewood and brass inlaid dining room furniture . A single piece is sometimes rabbeted as in detail B, to form both the slide and the guide antique slab table . Center guides (see detail C) are a necessity for triangular or odd-shaped drawers and preferred by many cabinetmakers for medium-sized drawers of regular shape empire style candelabras brass . They can be used in pairs for large drawers french chair with upholstering back . Center guides are commonly notched or doweled into the rails so that their front ends act as drawer stops above the rail, and being flush with the rail’s underside, serve to hold down the drawer below spider legs folding card table . A dadoed strip (detail D) or parallel strips are fastened to the bottom of the drawer, closely straddling the center guide apostle forks .
Drawers can be deepened by eliminating the rails between them neoclassic furniture . This is effected either by the use of side grooves that ride on guides in the cabinet’s sides (A, Figure 2 regency era anquite beds .6o), or by the use of projecting drawer bottoms that slidr between

pairs of guides as in B chippendale rosewood table . Closing stops can be provided by dowels in the lower rail antique french style kidney shaped table .
For easy fitting, lip drawers with rabbeted top and side edges that lap over
the stiles and rails are often employed, since they conceal the joints and act
as stops, as in C antique chamber pots . On the other hand, flush drawer joints, so popular in modern Dust shelves, when present, are either dadoed in the rails and slides or r bbeted flush with their bottoms, thus eliminating all projections that might ca h in the contents of the drawer beneath “18th century desserts” .
When drawers swell and bind, relief can often be secured by waxing the slides and guides pedestal leg english trestle table parts . Heavy drawers that bind are often in need of additional slide a center one, if side slides are in use, or side guides for drawers on center slides,

Always held in high esteem since earliest times, tables are now assuming additional importance by virtue of the dual roles often imposed upon them in this era of small homes and apartments antique dining table detailed carved legs . Their use has been further augmented by the application of common sense to modern decorating methods, stressing the central theme of comfort for the room’s occupants antique italian china markings . Thus we now have a profusion of side and end tables from which to select the proper lamp stand, or the most effective book, magazine, smoking accessory or beverage holder to fit the given height of a favorite armchair, loveseat or davenport 1600 century scroll back chair . Larger forms include gateleg, drop-leaf and extension features that permit the decorative side table to double as a dining or gaining unit antique sideboard cabinet 8 feet high with glass . The vogue for Colonial New England or Pennsylvania Dutch pieces has resurrected such interesting “folklore furniture” as the Lazy Susan, hutch, harvest, sawbuck and trestle tables, augmented by milk benches, cobblers’ benches, and a galaxy of straight, spool-turned, or richly carved gateleg tables with round, oval, triangular, octagonal, and other whimsically shaped but generally symmetrical tops i.i.e. exclusive capodimonte . No matter what the form or finish, however, the construction of a satisfactory table depends upon the two basic elements of sturdiness and utility loudon florals 1783-1843 .
Table nomenclature in most respects parallels that of chairs wash stands antique . The underframing that connects the legs and helps support the table top is customarily formed from two to four pieces of lumber tenoned or doweled edgewise into the tops of the legs and referred to as “aprons 19 c entree dish handle .” When these parts consist of narrower pieces set flat side up against the top, they are known as “rails “lorraine” style of furniture 1940’s .”

The usual practice in good cabinetmaking is to connect rails to legs by mea s of lapped dovetails as shown in detail D antique japanese black lacquer round tea table . Tapered legs may have two sides slanted, or all four robert adams marquetry . Reeding characteristics of 19th century furniture - england . Reeding is a carving process frequently applied to turned legs resulting in a series of equal, convex, longitudinal divisions, or “reeds art deco upholstery .” In order to insure uniformity, a strip of paper whose length is equal to the circumference of the turned leg is marked into equal divisions of the desired width of the reeds chinese qing porcelains . When the strip is wrapped around the turning, the marks can easily be transferred to the circumference of the piece antique 1700 silver tea pot .
For working, a bottomless reeding box (Figure 2 antique carved gateleg end table .26) is constructed a fraction longer than the turning thirties rocking chair .
