Caning the biarritz english pottery . The hand weaving of caned seats, backs, and other parts of furniture is rather a tedious process, involving the boring of a series of evenly spaced holes around the frame of the opening dresden china trinket box . The actual caning operation requires six weaving steps, plus the application of a binder antique claw footed oak table . The cane, which is imported from India, Ceylon, China, the Indian Archipeligo and the Malay Peninsula, is soaked in warm water before it is used, and must be kept tightly strung throughout the weaving, by means of removable pegs thrust through the holes 16th century spanish trunk .
Although the popularity of caning as a decorative effect declined sharply at the turn of the century, many households retain examples of handsome caned pieces american oak drop leaf table antique . Nowadays the repair of seats which were formerly hand-caned has become a relatively simple operation through the use of machine-woven cane webbing burr walnut tallboy with sunburst inlay . Procurable in various widths and lengths, the webbing can be chosen in plain or diagonal weaves, open or close woven italian revolving bookcase construction .
Replacing Cane Webbing 16th century silverware . Machine-woven cane webbing is anchored to the seat or back of a piece of furniture by a spline glued into a groove that parallels the opening george rectangle tilt top tea table mahogany . Its replacement is not difficult provided the spline is care- fully removed by softening the glue with water sabino marks . Assuming that a satisfactory

Rush Weaving london or british art . The renewal of interest in Early American and Coloni I furniture and accessories has automatically revived the craft of rush weavill! OUTDOOR FURNITURE
WITHIN the limitations of season and climate, the universal urgetoward outdoor living has become an important trend, which is noticeably reflected in modern architectural design antique desks by wilkinson and son . -New houses are being constructed to afford privacy to verandas, loggias, and patios dutch east india marks . Older houses are having their porches emphasized and their backyards glamorized antique pattern coat of arms . Picture windows and French doors are opening up the outside walls so that the formerly sporadically used porches and terraces have become integrated into the home as “outdoor rooms french table stretcher draw leaf .”
This flowing of the home’s interior into the open air has naturally exerted certain influences upon porch and lawn furniture design, as well as on exterior decoration neo-classical side chair . Finish leaves for old oak table? . Hand in hand with the selection of the kind of wood goes the choice of finish antique worcester porcelain factory+grainger . For white and colored effects, a good grade of lead and oil gloss paint applied in at least three coats will suffice under normal conditions dog kennel dressers . At the seashore, or wherever salt air is prevalent, it is advisable to substitute 15 to 20 per cent zinc white for a like amount of white lead antique 6 ft. st. louis credenza values . Finishing Methods black stone top coffee table octagon antique . When it comes to the matter of application, there are many amateur painters who are either unmethodical in their procedures, or are so engrossed in appearance and color that they lose sight of the fact that the primary reason for painting any outdoor construction is to preserve it antique fluted leg desk . Always held in high esteem since earliest times, tables are now assuming additional importance by virtue of the dual roles often imposed upon them in this era of small homes and apartments antique dining table detailed carved legs . Their use has been further augmented by the application of common sense to modern decorating methods, stressing the central theme of comfort for the room’s occupants antique italian china markings . Thus we now have a profusion of side and end tables from which to select the proper lamp stand, or the most effective book, magazine, smoking accessory or beverage holder to fit the given height of a favorite armchair, loveseat or davenport 1600 century scroll back chair . Larger forms include gateleg, drop-leaf and extension features that permit the decorative side table to double as a dining or gaining unit antique sideboard cabinet 8 feet high with glass . The vogue for Colonial New England or Pennsylvania Dutch pieces has resurrected such interesting “folklore furniture” as the Lazy Susan, hutch, harvest, sawbuck and trestle tables, augmented by milk benches, cobblers’ benches, and a galaxy of straight, spool-turned, or richly carved gateleg tables with round, oval, triangular, octagonal, and other whimsically shaped but generally symmetrical tops i.i.e. exclusive capodimonte . No matter what the form or finish, however, the construction of a satisfactory table depends upon the two basic elements of sturdiness and utility loudon florals 1783-1843 .
Table nomenclature in most respects parallels that of chairs wash stands antique . The underframing that connects the legs and helps support the table top is customarily formed from two to four pieces of lumber tenoned or doweled edgewise into the tops of the legs and referred to as “aprons 19 c entree dish handle .” When these parts consist of narrower pieces set flat side up against the top, they are known as “rails “lorraine” style of furniture 1940’s .”
If the aprons are not too wide they can be attached to the underside of the complete concealment is assured, or mortise fasteners (shown in B) can be moil tised into the tops of the table legs or aprons and screwed german tea table with tray . The top of the morti is left extending outward to provide a housing for short screws into the table to thus permitting a swiveling action during shrinkage wagner art deco furniture . The lug pictured in C is likewise allowed to slide in its slot if the rep shrinks jan van mekeren .
The usual practice in good cabinetmaking is to connect rails to legs by mea s of lapped dovetails as shown in detail D antique japanese black lacquer round tea table . Narrow rails of this type are common in commodes, bureaus, chiffoniers, and desks, whose tops call be secured by means of medium-sized screws through the rails vintage art deco rococo watch .
Legs beaded and decorated candalabras . In addition to square legs there are, in general, four divergent forms in common use, the tapered leg, the rounded leg, the turned leg, and the cabrio’ antique bachelor wardrobe .e leg antique chairs 1600 s all wood carved .
Tapered legs may have two sides slanted, or all four robert adams marquetry . The symmetry of a tapered leg depends upon an accurate layout on the original squared stock early 19th century mahogany desks with lion feet . Tile amount of taper having been determined, the horizontal distance is marked at the foot of both edges of one side of the leg germany furniture buffet . With a straightedge these marlis are connected with their corresponding upper (thick) corners antique porcelain food warmer . The same is done on the opposite side to insure uniformity as the taper is planed, or band-saw Ed and planed down to the lines on both sides of the leg french antique bedside chamber pot cupboards . Such a leg is set in a piece of furniture with the tapered sides inward, to suggest a splayed effect from tile front george 1 mahogany stool . Turned legs are produced on a lathe in designs varying from the very simple to richly ornate antique cupboard value .
Cabriole legs at first glance appear difficult of manufacture george iii pembroke table . They are not hard to produce, however, provided it is always remembered that a single pattern or templet is to be used for both sides small table tripod base antique . Reeding characteristics of 19th century furniture - england . Reeding is a carving process frequently applied to turned legs resulting in a series of equal, convex, longitudinal divisions, or “reeds art deco upholstery .” In order to insure uniformity, a strip of paper whose length is equal to the circumference of the turned leg is marked into equal divisions of the desired width of the reeds chinese qing porcelains . When the strip is wrapped around the turning, the marks can easily be transferred to the circumference of the piece antique 1700 silver tea pot .
For working, a bottomless reeding box (Figure 2 antique carved gateleg end table .26) is constructed a fraction longer than the turning thirties rocking chair . The latter is fastened in place by a screw in the center of each end near the upper edges of the box sideboard stretcher . A wedge is placed at the

A marking gage is now adjusted to bear against the side of the box so that each reed can be marked off vertically the length of the turning german fairground porcelain . Dovetail joints chippendale pedistal drum table . Perhaps one of the strongest of joints in fine cabinetmakin; is the dovetail joint (Figure 1 american empire daybed 19th century .33), because it resists separation in every directiol but the one from which the tenons were inserted, and even this weakness can be eliminated by gluing or pinning inlaid spanish table antique . As a corner joint, the dovetail is considereo a mark of good workmanship because its close fit is achieved at the price f accurate, painstaking labor and craftsmanship george bullock drawing . Although such a joint might be considered a postgraduate cabinetmaker’s subject, yet the enthusiastic woodworker will probably attempt its construction at some time in his career antique metal table with porcelain top . Its precision of fit is obtained by an elementary set of measurements, carefully executed antique 1800 century chest of drawers 7 drawyer mahogony .
Since the open, or through, dovetail is in reality but a modification of th, mortise and tenon joint, the first question facing the uninitiated is: Which are tenons, or pins, and which are the mortises, sockets, or dovetails (”tails”)? 01 a drawer, it is obvious that the dovetail joint must be so cut that it will withstaitl separation when the drawer is pulled out by its front antique square gateleg table . Therefore, the wider, fa
tailed mortises, sockets, are on the sides to hold the (often) narrower tenons, pins, of the front member against withdrawal antique drop leaf gate leg table .
Single through tenons are useful when edging drawing boards or work-tabl tops or for jointing stiles to upper drawer rails utensils used in britain for cooking . To insure a strong joint the to (mortise) is generally cut so that it is 4/10 of the width of the member along th-depth line chippendale dining table with 3 curved legs . The sides of the tail generally slope i in marius sabino leaping gazelle . in 6 in william taylor antiques . The procedure is a simplification of the methods explained in the following paragraphs antique perpetual calendar .
A finger (or box) joint consisting of the series of multiple square tenons and mortises is familiarly observed at the corners of small boxes such as honeycomb containers wood with mother of pearl inlay wall art . A multiple through dovetail, however, is a horse of another color venetian micromosaic mirror .
Certain general rules can be profitably applied to the art of dovetailing 18 century display cabinets . In the first place, the pins may be smaller than or equal in size to the tails, but in
Multiple Dove softwood are customarily wider than in hardwood construction new york antiques light art deco . For hardwood a good rule to follow is that the thickness on the (widest) face of the pins shall be approximately three fourths of the thickness of the wood antique dowry caskets . It is also good practice to insure that the distance from center to center of the pins is more than twice and less than three th-nes their width chinese chamber pot . In laying out muliple throng dovetails, the two outer or end pins are usually scaled down to half size, pl s Y8 in coalbrookdale neptune dish . for necessary strength japanese characteristic of later 19th century decoration . Both pins and sockets can be of equal width f desired, although, as previously stated, many craftsmen prefer the thinner pins

For the purpose of laying out a series of sockets, let us assume a drawer front Y8 in antique talavera . thick and 7Y2 in serving table . wide, with the mating side Y2 in collecting antique hair combs . thick table octagon marquetry drawer . The fir–t thing to do is to check to see that both ends are accurately squared 1930 art deco french armchairs . Since it s the side member that is to be cut into sockets or tails, it is first necessary -* estimate the number of pins to be cut in the front victorian candlesticks . On the basis of a Y8 in beilby glass prince of wales feathers newcastle . thit, drawer front, pins -Y4 of this thickness in width would average about -Y8 in 16th century spoons london . their faces george 1 walnut kneehole chest . For the distance between centers, if the mean of 2Y2 times the wid of the pins is selected, the resulting measurement will be i’%(, in mirrors design for dressing tables ., which wh- mahongony antique sideboards . divided into the 7Y2-i” occasional table dropleaf vintage . width of the drawer goes approximately 5 times, that i 5 centered spaces or sockets antique wood inlayed wine cellaret photos . However, there is to be a half pin at either end t the joint; therefore there will be but 4 full pins in all period hepplewhite cherry gateleg table .
Since a pin of half thickness is usuall too thin for safe cutting, it is customs to add an extra Y8 in antique italian marble box with fish legs . at each end to strengthen these half pins antique concertina door linen case . Accordingly, two lines are drawn Y8 in desk cabinet 18 century . in from each edge of the side member to represent the centers of the end sockets, the socket the maximum thickness of -Y8 in marble topped “robert adam” table . is next centered and connecting lines scribed between the joint edge and the back line to form the complete pin flatware forks types . An alternate method is to mark only the width of the pin along the board’s edge; then, by setting and clamping a bevel to register a slope of i to 6, the parallel sides of all pins are projected across the depth line art nouveau era used nesting tea tables . The bevel is then turned over and the other sides are marked and later joined horizontally across the center lines 19th century daybed .

The use of this T square will be greatly facilitated if a baseline upon which to proportion the average width of the tails (or pins) is squared off on the member to be measured, midway between the first depth line and the end of the board biedermeier bedside tables . The parallel spacing lines are then projected across or down to this baseline, indicating the average width of the tails thuringia biscuit . If the T square is applied at this point, no further measurements will be required art nouveau artist .
The actual cutting of the tails is as simple as sawing a double tenon english writing desk spiral legs . For the mechanic who has mastered the brace and bit, it is feasible to bore the proper sized holes at the depth of the tails antique table standing mirror . Then after clamping the piece vertically in a vise, the sides of the tails can be sawed with a backsaw french animal chairs . The socket bottoms can be finished off with a coping saw or chiseled across, cutting halfway through one side of the stock at a time galletables . For a perfect fit the saw kerfs must always he cut ‘n the waste material antique dining room sets empire style .
The dovetailed piece of drawer siding is now used as a templet for laying out the pins on the drawer’s front edge antique metal double candelabra . The dovetailed member is held firmly at a right angle while the tails are traced to outline the pins acanthus 16 century italian design . The depth of the pins is equal to the thickness of the drawer side, in this case Y2 in antique pembroke . Mark and cut as for tails hanoverian pattern forks . When several dovetails are to be cut to the same size, the members of each set of pins or tails can be clamped together and sawed out at one time palissy british .
Although the preceding instructions were based on a drawer whose carcass was jointed with through dovetails, such a joint is seldom encountered in the front of a drawer butterfly table in the eighteenth century . Instead the pins and tails are camouflaged by one of the three metlods shown in Figure 1 depression swizzle stick .33 antique octagon table brass wood . Half-lap dovetails are cut so that the side members lock into two thirds or three fourths of the thickness of the drawer front 19th century chinese silk works . Except for diagonal saw cuts along the sides table clocks 18th century american . the mortises in the front members must be chiseled out, after they are scribed from the tails, as in through-dovetail layot t cabriole antique chairs styles . Half pins are essential for a finished appearance at the top and bottom antique 18″ square drop leaf table on casters .
In a stopped dovetail the tails are cut only part of the way through the thic Hess of the side member, so that the pins are concealed in the final assembly thonet bentwood chair queen anne legs . n this case the pins are cut first antique english bone china tea sets empire . to be used as a templet for the stopped tails antique wheel engraved glass patterns .
A more satisfactory method of hiding the mortises in a dovetail joint is y means of a double-lapped dovetail, which fits together in the form of a rabbet d corner with the stopped pins in the drawer front leaving a sufficient projection of the front edge to cover the half end grain of the sides etling france 110 “opalescent glass” .
The height of perfection is achieved in the construction of the secret mit•r dovetail, as illustrated 19th century french furniture . This precise example of fine cabinetmaking, like the oth r modifications noted above, rosewood antiquite - decoration . must be chiseled out, with the exception of the rnit•r saw cuts that joint the shoulders, followed by triangular kerfs sawn as in t e stopped-lap dovetail antique alexander tables .

MAKING LIP THE KIT
AT THE outset the beginner is somewhat at a loss in selecting the tools he must have for a start, and those he should add to the kit later how to decorate with antique french marble dresser . It is futile to make a choice from the tool catalogue, which shows anything and everything: bright ideas in tools which never “came off,” old patterns which are still unequalled for efficiency and comfort in use; improved versions of well-tried patterns which the worker can adopt or not, according to his pocket display cabinet circular . The old proverb says that at night all cats arc grey, to the novice different tools in the catalogue appear of equal merit, and he will therefore benefit from the guidance given in this chapter antique japanese yellow vase .
The second part of the chapter deals with the use of tools, pointing out snags to avoid, and good methods to follow burslem rococo . But there are incidental hints all through this book on the proper use of the tools which are currently needed for the jobs in hand bureau fauteuil bureau . Time and material will be saved if the reader carefully studies the advice and instruction here presented faience cantagalli .
Too often the beginner buys tools which the most skilled craftsman would be handicapped in using wrought iron tripod candlestick 16th century . How then will the less skilled manage if his tools are of the wrong kind? As a general rule, only the best tools should be bought, but there are certain instances in which the most costly tools are not the most suitable antique bureauplat .
There is still another outstanding point vincennes gilded porcelain asian design . If tools are rightly chosen, there will be the least overlapping of the functions of the various tools de hua blue and white characteristics . Sometimes several tools can be used for the same purpose empire regency sofa . Chisels might be instanced: these should be so chosen that a minimum of chisels will cover the maximum range of work davenport cabinet desk .
The size of the kit will depend on the extent to which the woodworker intends to pursue this craft sheffield porcelain “herbs and spices” . The amount of money to be spent is also involved oriental tea tables cherrywood portable furnitur . It is best to buy a minimum quantity to start with, and to add to the kit as the need for the new tools arises dinnerware silver tureen .
Principal Requirements
The principal tools required by the woodworker will be discussed under separate headings rectangular gate leg table .
Saws campaign furniture pottery furniture . (Fig value of silver candelabra . 1 “friedlander wildenhaim” .) Perhaps the most useful type of saw is the hand-saw 16th century english chamber pot . The usual size of this is 26 in “empire designer, best known for pedestal tables with curved legs .; the dimension indicates the length of the blade florence deco furniture for drawing room . Hand-saws are of three kinds german oak schrank . The rip-saw has three points (teeth) to the inch, the half-rip four or five, and the cross-cut six or seven small four-legged table with flaps . The panel-saw is the small brother of the hand-saw “art deco interiors” . It is primarily a cross-cut saw and 22 in french side table inlay . is a good length 18th century dining tables . Its teeth being nearly as fine as those of a tenon-saw, it is most useful for final cross-cutting, such as when, say, an assembly end has to be cut to its final length william iv rosewood side chair . On account of the fineness of the teeth, the saw can be used to cut very close to a finishing line, when a couple of shavings from the plane will finish the squaring drop slant desk shell . This useful saw should not be regarded as a beginner’s too>, but it may be added to the kit later at the discretion of the woodworker antique commode made in boston brother .
Tenon- and Dovetail-saws
The tenon-saw is next in importance french gothic revival cabinet antiques . The numb,-,r of points is more or less standard and so does not arise when purchasing le corbusier thonet bentwood chair . Its practical difference froth tenon-saw is that the teeth are liner circular glass pedestal dining table . The thickness of blade varies, and a saw with a relatively thick blade is suitable for the finer work in carpentry, which will often be dovetailing walnut small queen anne oval top drop leaf table . Fine dovetail-saws
are used forcabinet work, particularly drawer making drum/breakfast table . On the whole it is best to choose a saw having a blade of medium thickness rounf mohogany table .
The bead-saw is, technically, for cutting the beads around the backs of “bar” doors, and similar work 1600 century scroll back chair . It does, however, everything that a dovetail-saw will do, but costs much less and is entirely suited to the borne worker boulle .
The bow-saw is for sawing curved shapes brass tables ancient writing . Today, curves are so seldom used that it is as well not to purchase the tool unless or until it is found to be necessary gilbert rhode chairs . A common error is to buy a bow-saw which is too large meubles wooden antique amsterdam . An average size is 10 in neo boulle furniture price ., the dimension again representing the length of the blade fold over tea table antiques .
The scribing-saw, or coping-saw, is similar to a fret-saw, except that the blade is stouter arm chair carved art deco sue mare . This enables the blade to withstand more pressure, so that it will pass through the work more speedily antique half circle dropleaf table . It will cut shapes from the thinnest material up to about ~ ih birmingham silver finial designs ., after which a bow-saw is more suitable jan van mekeren . The scribing-saw will cut more intricate shapes than the bow-saw, and the work will be finer macassar chair . The blade of the scribing-saw can, like that of the bow-saw, usually be turned to any angle in the frame types of drop leaf tables . There is another type which cannot be so adjusted, and this is not well adapted to its purpose primevera crackle glaze bird . But the tool is low in price, and for that reason might merit inclusion in the early kit work table with octagon side compartments reeded legs .
The pad-saw (or keyhole-saw) is for cutting holes which are too far in from the edge to be cut by the bowsaw or scribing-saw classic italien easy chairs . A hole big enough to take the blade (about in oak draw leaf table maryland .) is first bored, and into this the Saw iE inserted adam pattern silver candlesticks . It is used on work where a wider saw would be difficult to manipulate classical period sofas . It can be used for making straight or slightly curved internal cuts chair lion finial henri .
Metal has sometimes to be cut by the woodworker; the hack-saw is for this purpose hague clocks . In carpentry work, such as when thick bolts have to be cut, a fairly heavy, stout saw is preferable walnut small queen anne oval top drop leaf table . For cabinet work a smaller saw is more useful thonet recliner . Its frame is of 41-in antique gate leg oak table uk . round iron rod 1930 curved arms chair . It is therefore best to have all saws sharpened by a specialist antique looking drop leaf table .
